A work of classical conception yet executed with great spontaneity, *Mother and Child* is considered one of the most authentic expressions of Richard Guino’s sensibility. It synthesizes the artistic explorations he undertook over nearly a decade on the theme of motherhood and occupies a central place in his sculptural oeuvre, including in the collaborative work of Renoir and Guino, since one of the sculptures he created with the master of Les Collettes depicts Aline nursing their son Pierre (1916). In contrast to Renoir’s intimate portrayal of his wife and their firstborn, Guino favors here an allegorical and universal interpretation of the mother-child relationship. The first terracotta studies for this composition date back to 1911 and reflect a lengthy development process marked by numerous variations, one of which was acquired by Ambroise Vollard and sold to the Moscow collector Ivan Morozov in 1913. Guino gradually modified the figures’ positions, the child’s posture, and the group’s overall movement, while incorporating contemporary influences, notably those of Maillol, for whom he had served as an assistant. After creating several monumental figures (including the two large nudes signed with his name, *Vendangeuse* (Grape Picker), 1913, and *Baigneuse* (Bather), 1915), Guino exhibited the plaster cast of *Mother and Child* at the Galerie Hébrard and then at the Salon d’Automne in 1922. He planned a stoneware edition with the Manufacture de Sèvres, and one copy was commissioned by the Directorate of Fine Arts in 1923. Despite the favorable opinion of the Manufacture’s artistic committee, the project was abandoned due to technical difficulties related to the original molds and the high cost of their restoration. The official commission was ultimately canceled in 1933. Guino, absorbed by other ceramic projects and aware of the risks inherent in firing a sculpture of this scale, then postponed his project. He ultimately chose a bronze cast, produced in 1934 at his own expense by Susse. Presented at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français and then at the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune, the sculpture found no buyer and remained installed in the artist’s garden in Antony until its sale in 1984. Our bronze was cast under the supervision of the Richard Guino Estate, posthumously, in 1988.
