Letter from Brother GOULARD [Antoine de GOULARD, Carthusian prior of the Chartreuse de LUGNY], Châtillon-sur-Seine, January 13, 1745, addressed to Mr. BERNARD, “painter and gilder” in DIJON. The transcription has been adapted to modern spelling for easier reading: “You had promised me that you would come to work on our church last September. However, you broke your word. Therefore, I am writing to ask you to let me know if I can count on you for next March. I absolutely do not wish to delay any further once spring begins. If you refuse, I will hire someone else; there is no shortage of people offering their services. I will await your reply by mail as soon as possible so that I may make a decision. I am sending you my address. I would also like to mention that I have a marble slab here for grinding your paints. I wish you a happy new year. As I await your reply, please accept the assurance of my highest esteem, Sir, your most humble and most obedient servant” [The church of this Carthusian monastery was consecrated in 1203 and remodeled in 1563. At the time this letter was written, the Carthusians had decided on renovations to their church: opening windows in place of the small Romanesque openings and adding new decoration in the Rococo style of the time]
