ROUEN, August 18, 1791. Document signed by two members of the Correspondence Committee. Two pages, in-4°. “Brothers and Friends. Your declaration regarding the protest of the 290 members of the National Assembly was read during one of our public sessions and received just and abundant applause. Citizens called upon to contribute their wisdom to the great work of securing the happiness of 25 million people and their descendants did not hesitate to protest against laws under which all peoples will soon be eager to live; whose servile souls could not rise to the sublimity of the principles of our Holy Constitution. From that moment on, they lost your esteem. You saw in them nothing but offenders against the sovereignty of the people, and by branding them with the mark of ignominy, you avenged the outraged nation in a manner worthy of true patriots. Just as you denounce them to future generations, we denounce them to their scorn… ”
