CLOSURE OF ROYALIST POLITICAL SOCIETIES. MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORATE. “LE TOURNEUR,” President—Ventôse 9, Year 4 (February 27, 1798): “No corporations or associations contrary to public order may be formed…. In the eyes of the Directory… wherever it does not see sincere Republicans, it sees Royalists….” Decree of the Executive Directory: 1°) The gathering held in the premises known as the SALON DES PRINCES or the SALON DES ARTS, on the Boulevard des Italiens; the gathering held in the House of SÉRILLY, on the Vieille Rue du Temple; the gathering held at the Palais-Égalité under the name “SOCIÉTÉ DES ÉCHECS”; the gathering held at the former Couvent des Génovéfains, known as the “SOCIÉTÉ DU PANTHÉON”; the association known as the PATRIOTES, formed at 854 Rue Traversières; are hereby declared illegal and contrary to public order. Their respective premises shall be closed within 24 hours, and the documents found there shall be sealed. 2°) The theater on Rue Feydeau and the building known as the Church of Saint-André-des-Arcs shall likewise be closed within 24 hours.” From the Printing Office of the Executive Directory.
