Decree issued by SAUZAY, Prefect of Mont Blanc, on 7 Thermidor, Year 8 (July 26, 1800) – “…Having been informed that, since the return of French troops to Italy, and especially since the defeat of the enemy at MARENGO, individuals listed on emigrant registers, or who have taken up arms against the Republic, have returned to this Department, and that several others are preparing to enter it, by virtue of passports issued by French generals; Considering that most of them may have believed themselves entitled to cross the border by means of these improperly issued passports… hereby decrees…”.
