Gabriel DONNADIEU (Nîmes, Gard, 1777–1849) Although he was appointed Baron of the Empire in 1809 and Brigadier General in 1811, he detested Napoleon. He was forced into retirement in 1811 following a conspiracy against the Emperor in support of Moreau and placed under surveillance. He naturally sided with the Bourbons: Letter A.S., 1 page, large 8vo: “I send my regards to my friend XXX [the name has been crossed out]. How is he? I ask him to let me know if he has written to Paris regarding the newspaper. I have taken action on my own. I am currently working on a short work that I intend to send to the printer before the opening of the [parliamentary] session; the arrangements for this journal should be finalized by that time. Yours sincerely” [General Donnadieu is known to have written only one genuine work: *De la vieille Europe, des Bois et des Peuples de notre époque* (*On Old Europe, the Forests, and the Peoples of Our Time*), for which he was prosecuted in 1837 for insulting the King and sentenced to two years in prison!]
