MACDONALD (Etienne, Jacques, Joseph, Alexandre, Duke of TARENTE) Sedan/Ardennes 1765–1840 – General in 1793, Marshal of the Empire in 1809. Autograph letter signed “MACDONALD,” Paris, June 28, 1832, to his future landlord. His lease is set to expire in 48 hours, and his landlord is pressing him to renew it. He wants to move, for the sake of his health, to be closer to his children, and to live on the right bank of the Seine, with a southern exposure: “Your apartment suits me; there is some criticism to be made regarding the cramped kitchens and the small number of servants, though I will be able to make do…” ” He requests 10 renovations before taking it: “by having the mirrors in the living room straightened, letting more light into the rooms to the left of the coachman’s and grooms’ quarters, installing an oven in the kitchen, and a device to ensure the safety of the wine barrels in the cellar… ” “As soon as the minor repairs listed in the 10 items are completed,” he will send him compensation.
