GERMAIN in Morlaix, regarding the writer Émile SOUVESTRE (MORLAIX 1806–1854). “My dear friend. I delivered your package to your poor SOUVESTRE: I had seen him on Saturday. We spoke at length; he was overcome by deep sorrow. He had recalled all the hardships of his youth—a life so nobly and dignifiedly lived without a single blemish—and though his heart was filled with grief, at least I found him to be courageous. So I thought I could send him your heartfelt gift, which I did with a little note attached to your letter. Thank you a thousand times for thinking of me to act as your intermediary…”
