DE BATZ DE TRENQUELLÉON. LOT-ET-GARONNE. GERS. 2 Letters fro - Lot 165
DE BATZ DE TRENQUELLÉON. LOT-ET-GARONNE. GERS. 2 Letters from Charles de BATZ, knight, Baron of Trenquelléon, Lord of Le Guay and Saint-Julien, born in 1712 (The Château de TRENQUELLÉON was built in FEUQUEROLLES, in Lot-et-Garonne) - Autograph letter signed “Le Chevalier de BATZ” in Nérac, (Gers) January 10, 1782, addressed to Mr. De BAZIGNAN, Commander of the Order of Saint Lazarus, in AGEN (Lot-et-Garonne): “I always receive with renewed pleasure, my dear Commander, the tokens of your regard and friendship, which I hold in the highest esteem…. My accursed gout forces me to remain almost entirely within my town and its countryside. My attack two years ago was so severe that I thought your humble servant was on his way to the afterlife… I was unaware that you had been ill. I would not have failed to inquire about it and to try, through my friends (doctors) in Montpellier, to remedy the situation… I thank you for the arrangement you’re proposing. Since my nephew has five legitimate children to support, he needs more than what you’re offering, and I don’t believe he’ll be able to find what he needs in the provinces. We have a sick sailor in Baltimore… I am very afraid for him, left without help after having lost everything on the ship he was on, which was burned. His situation cannot be pleasant. What can be done? He is in the hands of Providence. So far, he has brought us nothing but sorrow… I do, however, sympathize with you for having such a burden of affairs. I know you need them for your health. Take care of yourself and remember, my dear sir, that Commander de BASIGNAN is no child and that he must be spared for the sake of his friends. I ask that you always remain among those whom I am truly honored to count as friends.” 4 pages, in-8° + Letter A.S. from the Chevalier de BATZ, from NÉRAC (Gers) on February 3, 1780. 2 pages, in-8°: “Sir. I had thought I was not causing you so much trouble by asking you to expedite my niece’s marriage to Mr. de BOUZET, but whether from me or my brother’s letter—a play on words or a straightforward statement, as you and I both prefer— I had written to him that my best friend would take action to please me and that he should speak with him rather than go searching far and wide…”
