WAR OF 1870–71. MARSEILLE (13), March 2, 1871. PROCLAMATION - Lot 591
WAR OF 1870–71. MARSEILLE (13), March 2, 1871. PROCLAMATION by H. FOUQUIER, Acting Prefect of Bouches-du-Rhône: “The National Assembly has ratified the preliminary peace terms. Germany demands one-fifth of Lorraine, including the city of METZ; Alsace, minus the heroic fortress of BELFORT; a war indemnity of five billion; and the occupation of part of our territory until this indemnity is paid! In exchange for these painful sacrifices, Paris will be liberated from German occupation, and our prisoners will be set free…. It is the preservation of the Republic that will avenge us against the demands of the German Empire. Let us be a free people… I address you, inhabitants of the City of Marseille… Let us preserve order; it is through order that the Republic lives. Thus, we shall preserve for the future a citadel that never capitulates: justice, and a weapon that never breaks: Liberty. ” J. Doucet et Comp. Printers to the Prefecture, 7 rue Moustiers. Poster (96 x 50) Condition A.
