Dreyfus Affair - Constant Coquelin the Elder (1841–1909), actor / Signed autograph letter, 1 p. in-8, written on a reused, opened envelope, to the journalist and Republican politician Charles Laurent [1849–1928]: Regarding an appraisal of paintings conducted by the painter Jean-Charles Cazin, a friend and fellow countryman of Coquelin - Paintings (including one by Jean-François Millet) belonging to a friend of Laurent’s that were offered to Coquelin, a great art lover and collector: “The appraisal did not go well—Cazin did not recognize the Millet—and he feels that the others have been poorly restored” - In fact: “I’m going to return the paintings to your friend, who, I hope, won’t hold it against me or withdraw his promise regarding the others” - He adds, alluding to the famous “Dreyfus Affair,” which was constantly on everyone’s mind at the time: “It seems to me that they’re going to cheat their way through this affair again. What a mess, my God!” [Coquelin was an ardent supporter of Dreyfus]
