JOLY (Claude): Collection of true and important... - Lot 35 - Vermot et Associés
JOLY (Claude): Collection of true and important maxims for the institution of the king. Against the false and pernicious policy of Cardinal Mazarin, supposedly the Superintendent of His Majesty's education. With two apologetic letters for the said collection against the extract of S.N. avocat du Roy au Chatelet. Paris, 1663. In-12 contemporary vellum, XII and 283 pp. + 2 ff. and 65 pp. (some very light spotting). "Although bearing the address of Paris, this volume comes positively from the Elzevier presses of Amsterdam (...) It must have been executed at the expense of the author or of a French bookseller, because it is not carried in any of the official catal. of the Elzevier. This book, written with great vivacity and boldness, is the work of Claude Joly, canon of Notre-Dame de Paris. The author, who had visited the Elzevier establishment in Leiden in August 1646 (...) had remained in contact with the house (...). The Collection of maxims was condemned to be burned by the hand of the executioner. In response to this sentence, Joly wrote two apologetic letters, which were also printed by the Elzeviers as a follow-up to his book. The volume, enriched with this supplement, was published again in 1663, with a new title. The work contains, among other pieces, the translation in verse of the 'Discours de messire Michel de l'Hospital sur le sacre de François II, contenant une instruction excellente, comme un roy doit gouverner son Estat' (...)" Willems, 1165.
