Pierre Le Lorrain, abbé de VALLEMONT (1649-1721) was a French literary scholar, physicist and doctor of theology. He is best known for his works on the occult, in particular his Physique occulte, devoted to the divining rod. He attributes a wide range of powers to the divining rod: it can be used to discover springs, of course, but also metal mines or the perpetrators of a crime. He explains the movement of the wand by the invisible interplay of certain "corpuscles".
