WARBURTON (William): Dissertations sur l'union... - Lot 40 - Vermot et Associés
WARBURTON (William): Dissertations sur l'union de la religion, de la morale, et de la politique, tirées d'un ouvrage de M. Warburton. London, Darrès, 1742. 2 vols. in-12 contemporary marbled basane, spine ribbed and ornamented (library labels at foot, spine slightly split over 2 cm, corners worn, small bookplates on titles). William Warburton (1698-1779) was an English scholar and ecclesiastic, chaplain to the Prince of Wales, Bishop of Glocester; his book : L'Alliance entre l'Église et l'État, ou la Nécessité d'une religion établie, 1736 was translated here into French, by Étienne de Silhouette (Limoges 1709 -1767), chancellor of the House of Orléans, then comptroller-general of Louis XV's finances from March to November 1759, when he was dismissed for: wanting to restore finances by taxing the privileged and the richest...! Important dissertations in XVI parts, on the alliance of religion, power and politics, also in response to the debate of Enlightenment philosophers. The author defends the association of power and religion, a text that is always interesting and highly topical when we consider the abuses of power that are still made today in the name of religion. A good copy.
