Psalterion or the Book of David's Psalms - Lot 37
Psalterion or the Book of David's Psalms Turkish translation printed in Greek characters by metropolitan Seraphim of Angora (Ankara). Constantinople, impr. Isaac de Castro, 1827. 225 pages; leather-bound with English title-piece Turco- Greeks Psalms. The Ottoman Turkish dialect spoken by Orthodox Christians in Cappadocia, Karamanlidhika, was written in the Greek alphabet. Turkish was the lingua franca of the Ottoman Empire, which meant that Turks were not the only speakers: Armenians, Greeks and Jews were also fluent in Turkish. But as there was as yet no common educational system in Turkey, these peoples wrote Turkish in their own alphabets.
