TARN. REVOLUTION. Jean-Pierre PEZOUS (Albi 1758 - 1841) Dépu - Lot 329
TARN. REVOLUTION. These two pieces have caused much pleasure and sensation. We have also seen with great satisfaction the Decree of the National Assembly which rectifies the error complained of by the towns of ALBI and LAVAUR... We have had, here, not precisely troubles, but a little fermentation. An attempt was made to arouse the people under the pretext that religion was in danger. These are the same means used everywhere, with just as little success. A fortnight ago, they managed to incite a few members of the People, and many women, to make a noise when they wanted to read from the pulpit, before the sermon, a printed document believed to be a decree concerning the Clergy, and which was the King's speech (Louis XVI) and the Address of the National Assembly to the provinces. A similar attempt was then made to adopt the Cocarde Blanche. Two men of the People, one of whom was Drum Major of the Castraise Legion, were incited to recruit in the cabarets for the White Cockade. Our brave youth soon exposed and denounced the project, and the municipality had these two men arrested... Deputations of the District National Guards are arriving from all sides to offer their help, if needed, in maintaining good order, and to form a Federation whose main purpose will be to be always ready to procure, on the requisitions that may be made of them, the full and complete execution of the Decrees of the National Assembly. The Castra Legion is due to send out a circular letter these days, inviting all the National Guards of the Département to join this Federation, and you can see that the expiring remnants of the Aristocracy and the temporal power of the Clergy will not be very formidable against such a league. The primary assemblies have been set for the eighteenth throughout the department, and the general assembly of electors for the 26th. I agree that the delay is short... nothing is more instant than the prompt organization of the departments. I am with the most sincere attachment..."
