Jean-Étienne CHAMPIONNET (Valence/Drôme 1762 - 1800) General - Lot 304
Jean-Étienne CHAMPIONNET (Valence/Drôme 1762 - 1800) General-in-Chief of the Army of the Alps. Long letter signed to Major General GRENIER. To headquarters in ST-PAUL on Fructidor 12, year 7 (August 29, 1799) - 2 folio pages: "I am informed, My Dear General, that the enemy is maneuvering in Piedmont, that he has left Novi and that a major part of these forces are marching on Alexandria and a Column on Cuneo, does he want to force the Army of Italy to leave Genoa by penetrating through the Valleys...? Does he want to invest Cuneo, or penetrate France via the Maurienne? These are several hypotheses that must be addressed with the few means we have left... You will always be able to repel any enemy who might slip into the Valleys; you must, with your entire vanguard, harass the enemy and give him cause for concern...".
