SEINE-ET-MARNE. 1789. Baron DESPATYS DE COURTEILLES Pierre É - Lot 359
SEINE-ET-MARNE. 1789. Baron DESPATYS DE COURTEILLES Pierre Étienne, Attorney, Deputy of the Third Estate to the Estates-General of 1789 representing the Bailiwick of MELUN (Clamecy, Nièvre, 1753 – Melun, Seine-et-Marne, 1841). Autograph letter signed “De COURTEILLES,” written at VERSAILLES on May 21, 1789, addressed to Mr. CABARET, prosecutor at the Parliament in Paris. 2 pages, in-8°: “It has not been possible for me, sir, to attend to my case against Dufflot. No sooner had you handed me the documents than I received the summons to the Estates-General. All my time has since been taken up with the preliminary preparations and the convening of the assemblies of my bailiwick, the processing of all the cases and lawsuits under my jurisdiction that had fallen behind, and the arrangements for my relocation to Versailles, where I have been since the 25th of last month. I cannot put you in a position to comply with Mr. Bourgeois’s summons, but I do not believe he will insist once you have explained the above to him and pointed out that foreclosure cannot be granted against a Deputy to the Estates-General. If he does not accept these reasons, the community will surely do so. In any case, the community can only order you to hand over the documents by granting you an extension… I do not intend to leave this place, where I have all my staff, and I should not be required to make a special trip to MELUN.”
