Octave FEUILLET (Saint-Lô, Manche, 1821–1890) Novelist and p - Lot 582
Octave FEUILLET (Saint-Lô, Manche, 1821–1890) Novelist and playwright, member of the Académie Française. 2 Signed autograph letters and a photograph: Letter from A.S. of ST-LO (Manche), 1832, 3 pages, in-8°: “I would be, Sir, very happy and deeply honored to see my name appear alongside yours, and among those you mention. But without having any binding commitment to *La Revue des Deux Mondes*, I could not, without a lack of consideration bordering on ingratitude, sever ties with it—ties that I have always had nothing but praise for. I will not press the matter with you, Sir, as you will immediately appreciate this consideration. Despite the purely moral obligation that binds me to *La Revue des Deux Mondes*, I know that I could, in all good conscience, contribute to another publication; the one you edit would appeal to me more than any other: But my pen is so slow, my work is so difficult, and the space my output can occupy in a year is so small that it cannot be divided. Among the troubles caused by my lack of productivity, the one I feel in responding so poorly to your gracious offer is certainly one of the most acute. I therefore make you no promise… ” + Letter from A.S. on letterhead “Le Chemin près Tournan (Seine-et-Marne), October 1867”: “Mr. Joseph de Baye, I very much wish to make your acquaintance, and I shake your hand. ” + Original period photograph of her portrait, visiting-card size, by Reutlinger.
